'Piku'- Movie Review
I've been waiting for Piku since over 3 months now. Finally, when it released on the 8th of May, 2015, I somehow managed to get tickets for the second day. Almost all the theaters are running houseful so far! The movie is engrossing, you'll imagine yourself there with the Banerjees in CR Park & I didn't even realize when 2 hours were over!!
Piku is a MUST watch for all age groups. Its one of the finest films of 2015 so far- endearing & special. Its a film which every family & working woman in India will be able to relate to. Shoojit Sircar has definitely mesmerized us all with the simplicity & originality of the movie.
Piku has a remarkable cast with the Industry's finest- Amitabh Bachchan as 'Baba', Deepika Padukone as 'Piku' & Irfaan Khan as 'Rana'. This is a story of Piku, a girl in her late twenties who cares & tends to her aged Baba (father in Bengali) & plays the dual role of a mother & daughter to him. Having lost his wife when Piku was seven, Bhaskor Banerjee's world revolves around Piku & his bowel problems.
It is a story of a cranky old widower, who grumbles about constipation, bowel movements & shows remorse when his health reports turn out normal. He dislikes most people, & is overly protective about his Piku. Wanting to try different ways to clear his bowels everyday, Bhaskor infuriates everyone around him with his detailed explanations of his alimentary canal. Despite her father's whimsical ways, Piku loves him & courageously agrees to his wish of going on a road trip to Calcutta, their native place.
The film made me smile widely at most times, except the time when Piku's eyes brimmed with tears, I found a quiet tear slide down mine too. The audience too was guffawing away, at Bhaskor Banerjee's problems, which they could relate to, with their own families. Rana's entry is beautifully weaved into the father-daughter relationship.
Amitabh Bachchan's acting is fabulous as always & this may be Deepika Padukone's best work after Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. Padukone's expressions speak more than the dialogues in the movie. Irfaan Khan with his quiet demeanor & flawless acting steals our hearts.
The music is therapeutic & not the usual song & dance sequences seen in Bollywood movies. Anupam Roy has done remarkably well with the background scores blending in with the scenes. The sarod music playing along the movie is soothing.
The film shows progressive writing, insightful thinking & attention to detail. An intimate familial topic like this, to be accepted & loved by the masses shows that cinema in India has definitely matured. Take a bow, Shoojit Sircar & Juhi Chaturvedi !
All in all, its a guarantee that you'll love Piku!! I'm off to watch it for a second time now.
